Just like that, the 2018 season came to a conclusion for the Atlanta Falcons. One that resulted in a 7-9 finish. It was one that also left a bitter taste in the mouth of players, coaches, fans, and anyone else associated with the Falcons organization. For fifth-year head coach Dan Quinn, it affected his taste buds a little more than others. Somehow, Quinn became a little hungrier. Instead of leaning on the element of complacency, Quinn decided to step to the plate and take a strong hold on what made him a head coach in the first place: guiding a defense. It’s called Black Monday around the NFL universe. The day after the regular season comes to an end usually begins a carousel of head coaching terminations. Quinn Stitched Duke Riley Jersey , however, moved on from young coordinators Steve Sarkisian and Marquand Manuel on that day. Even with the number of injuries that piled up to the point of no return, Quinn foresaw enough to feel that a change at those vital positions was needed. The offensive coordinating spot was eventually given to a familiar face around Flowery Branch in Dirk Koetter. In a move that is often not seen, Quinn named himself Atlanta’s defensive signal caller. For a moment, flash back to the 2013 season, and you will see Quinn in charge of one of the more dominating defenses the NFL has seen in the last 25 years. A unit of vicious defenders that was No. 1 in total defense, points allowed, and takeaways. They capped off the season with a whitewashing of a Peyton Manning-led offense. Quinn was at the helm of the defense the next season as the Seahawks made another Super Bowl appearance and were on the brink of back-to-back titles. Hop back in my time machine as we go back to Week 13 of the 2016 season. A period of the season where Quinn took over defensive play calling duties from then-coordinator Richard Smith. We then saw an extremely young bunch of defenders force 17 turnovers over their final eight games of the season Youth Duke Riley Jersey , including the playoffs, after forcing only 12 in the previous 11 games. In four complete seasons, Quinn has a regular season record of 36-28 with two playoff appearances and an NFC Championship under his belt. Of course many will want to bring up that fourth quarter of Super Bowl 51, which does fall on the shoulders of the head coach. But for the sake of this column, I’ll bypass that. It has been beaten like a drum enough. Quinn has a lot of factors in his favor entering the 2019 season. For one, he has a very productive tandem in quarterback Matt Ryan and receiver Julio Jones — a tandem that can put up points in bunches. He also has a young thoroughbred in receiver Calvin Ridley, who scored 10 receiving touchdowns during his rookie 2018 season. Another component is the strong staff that is now surrounding Quinn in Atlanta. There are three former NFL head coaches on the staff (OC Dirk Koetter, WR coach Raheem Morris, TE coach Mike Mularkey) and a special assistant (Bob Sutton) with over 40 years of coaching experience. It’s a group of coaching decision makers that provide arguably the best foundation during the Quinn era. Quinn continues to say all of the right things. He used this offseason to focus on the little intricacies that hurt the team last season: improving the offensive line, addressing the time management aspect within the game, and getting healthy as a team. He’s also the youngest of the four on the list, meaning he could be a long-term option for the Ravens to utilize. His market value ($8.9M) is also a bit cheaper than Tyrell Williams ($9.6M) or Golden Tate’s ($10.2M).I’m also a fan of Tyrell’s play, though he’s cooled off after his 2016 season when he produced 69 catches, 1059 yards and seven touchdowns. As it turned out, Phil Dawson missed the potential game winner, the Seahawks got the ball back in great field position and if course Russell Wilson got them quickly into FG range where Sebastian Janikowski nailed the game winner. Ugh.The next week the Cardinals and Josh Rosen got their first win, a nice 28-18 victory on the road versus the 49ers, thanks in good measure to a perfectly executed 75 yard bomb from Rosen to Christian Kirk on the first offensive play from scrimmage, which put the Cardinals ahead 7-6.Rather than take you through the rest of the losses and the two other wins versus the 49ers at home and the Packers at Lambeau Stadium in the snow, here are the plusses and minuses of Josh Rosen’s performances.What Josh proved:* He is excellent at following the early 12-14 scripted plays. He engineered first possession scoring drives in several games, like in LA versus the Chargers where he marched the team right down the field for the game’s first TD.* His footwork and passing mechanics are near textbook. He sets his feet well and the ball comes off his hand cleanly and with tight, wind piercing spirals.* He is much more mobile than you might think. Late in the season, he ran a bootleg to his right an threw a perfect TD strike to Larry Fitzgerald right inside the pylon. That play was a work of art. As was the skinny post TD he threw to Christian Kirk versus the Lions. But his best play on the move was converting a 3rd and 23 in the 4th quarter of the upset win versus the Packers when he was flushed from the pocket to his right and then found Larry Fitzgerald for a 24 yard gain. This allowed the offense to go down and kick the game winning FG (20-15) with 1:41 left.* He can take a pounding and he gets right back up---and he never complains or points fingers.* Very good rhythm, footwork and timing on play action passes. Works very well from under center.What Josh needs to improve:If i were coaching Josh, I would focus on three things: (1) stop trying to score 14 points at once (a.k.a. “hero ball”). In other words, be patient. Take what the defense is giving you and keep chipping away; (2) on intermediate timing routes do a better job looking off the safety and driving the ball in there on time (as a rookie Josh tended to hold it a half a second too long and in the NFL, as we all know, a half a second is the difference between a completion and a possible interception); (3) he needs to take a page out of Carson Palmer’s book. First of all, if you go back and watch Josh’s tapes at UCLA, Josh thrives when he has a security blanket at TE. He did not have a good, productive TE in Arizona. In fact the Cardinals’ TEs were unreliable. Now, I know TE Mike Gesicki didn’t have as promising a rookie year as he and the team had hoped, but that could change dramatically with Rosen on board. Rosen will love having Nick O’Leary and Dwayne Allen to throw to as well. Chad O’Shea’s system favors Rosen’s strengths---which is why your GM, Chris Grier, stuck his neck out to trade for him. Thomas’ 2018 campaign was one for the books as he pulled in 125 receptions for 1,405 yards and nine touchdowns on an unprecedented 85% catch rate (147 targets). As we all know, Thomas abused the Rams in their first encounter with 12 receptions for 211 yards and a touchdown. The major positive for the Rams this time around is that CB Aqib Talib is healthy and playing, and his body style/game matches up well with a player similar to Thomas’ play style. Notably, Marcus Peters had an awful game, so look for the matchup between these two and Mike Thomas to be a back-and-forth one.WR Brandin Cooks vs CB Marshon LattimoreFormer Saint Brandin Cooks also had himself a nice return to the Superdome as he reeled in six receptions for 112 yards and a touchdown in week nine. This week he’ll likely see a ton of Marshon Lattimore in coverage as Lattimore can be seen travelling with teams’ #1 receivers at times, and the Saints will likely view Cooks as that after the first matchup. Cooks (as well as running mate WR Robert Woods) will need to create as much separation as possible to create open throwing lanes for QB Jared Goff.RB’s Todd Gurley/C.J. Anderson vs Saints’ front-sevenThe duo of Todd Gurley and C.J. Anderson combined for 39 carries, 238 rushing yards, and three touchdowns on the ground last week against the best rushing defense remaining in the playoffs (Dallas Cowboys). This week, they’ll get another solid defense, but one that is absolutely a step down from the Cowboys’ caliber. The rushing attack for the Rams’ offense has thrown a wrench into what everyone thought they knew about the Rams, keeping defenses off-kilter. Good luck to the Saints’ defense, as they’ll need to prepare to stop everything from an explosive passing game with multiple weapons, to a backfield with multiple runners who spell each other creating freshness and a full compliment of varying skill-sets.Rams’ OL vs Saints’ DLThe Rams’ offensive line is simply one of the best (if not the best) units in the league. Their ability to perform at an elite level both in pass pro and in the run game is what makes the offense click. When Jared Goff is given a clean pocket, he can look unstoppable. As well as the run game, which we all seen the capabilities of last week. In the first contest, Jared Goff went un-sacked and the rushing attack gained just over 100 yards on the ground. The Saints’ key weapon on the defensive line will be DE Cameron Jordan, who’ll require extra attention. The recent loss of DT Sheldon Rankins will prove to be a large feat to overcome for New Orleans, though rookie DE Marcus Davenport can still be an impact second defensive lineman.ILB’s Cory Littleton/Mark Barron vs RB Alvin KamaraAlvin Kamara is a massive issue, and the Rams will need to find a way to at least limit him out of the backfield. In the week nine contest, Kamara had 19 rushes for 82 yards and two touchdowns, though he also chipped in with four receptions for 34 yards and a touchdown. Everything the Rams tried failed. From covering with Cory Littleton or Mark Barron, to moving FS Lamarcus Joyner down in man coverage, or even bracket coverage, nothing worked. It might be best to take a page out of the Cowboys’ playbook and allow a secondary member (Joyner, Nickell Robey-Coleman, Marqui Christian, Blake Countess) to come down and man cover Kamara one-on-one.DT’s Aaron Donald/Ndamukong Suh vs OG’s Andrus Peat/Larry WarfordAaron Donald — as always — had an incredible impact in the first contest as he registered a tackle-for-loss, four QB hits, a pass deflection David Long Jersey nfl draft , and a fumble recovery. The duo of Donald and Ndamukong Suh didn’t register for any sacks in the contest, so that’ll hopefully change in this edition. The interception actually came from LB Alex Anzalone who made a tremendous play changing directions on a whim and picking the ball of while diving, so that one wasn’t necessarily a bad play from Goff (nor from the Saints’ secondary). For whatever reason, in three games against the Saints, Goff has had incredible success as he’s combined for 76 completions on 115 attempts, 959 passing yards, eight passing touchdowns, and three interceptions.Get ready for this game folks.
