RIO DE JANEIRO -- An entire nation rose to its feet on Day 8 of the 2012 Olympic Games in London as Mo Farah, Greg Rutherford and Jessica Ennis-Hill all won gold on what became known as Super Saturday. Now, it celebrates Wonderful Wednesday. It is still early days at the 2016 version of the quadrennial showpiece and, while some of the better-known British athletes have already slipped up, the team showed off its depth on Day 5 as its rising stars set Team GB on course to surpass the medal totals of the last two Games.Just days ago you could have asked ordinary sports fans which athletes they knew from diving and canoeing and Tom Daley would have likely been the only name coming back. Now, add Chris Mears, Jack Laugher and Joe Clarke. On Wednesday, they etched their names in Team GB folklore and became the new headliners. At the same stage in Beijing in 2008, Britain had seven medals. In London it was nine. And you dont need a historian to remind you the team has already beaten the gold medal return of one -- courtesy of Matthew Pinsent and Steve Redgrave in the coxless pairs -- from the debacle in Atlanta 20 years ago. Those waking up on Thursday morning in Britain will see Team GB are in a tie for 5th overall in the Rio medal table, and 9th when colours are factored in: three gold, three silver, six bronze.Athletes and spectators alike would have been forgiven for thinking the Games were back in Britain, as Wonderful Wednesday started wet and windy and rarely changed. Fans at outdoor venues may have had to show a bit of the famous British stiff upper lip, but it was all worthwhile as shooting, diving, canoeing, gymnastics and cycling all came to the fore. Its not hard to argue that rowing would also have joined the medal rush, in the mens quadruple sculls, if the poor weather hadnt postponed the action at Rios Lagoa neighbourhood for another day.Tour de France winner Chris Froome got the medal count going with bronze in the time trial and, while he would have fancied his chances of gold, he was happy with the same podium finish that he achieved in London. From the Pontal roads to shooting in Deodoro, where Steven Scott beat compatriot Tim Kneale to take the bronze in the double trap. After, the friends ended their temporary rivalry to hug in celebration and consolation.Just 17 minutes later, at 3.46 p.m. local time, Clarke battled his way to gold in the mens K1 canoeing. By 4.40 p.m. Sally Conway had taken bronze in the womens 70kg judo having narrowly missed out on a place in the gold medal match. Then came Britains biggest triumph with Laugher and Mears winning Britains first ever diving gold in the 3m synchronized springboard. As they sat assessing their triumph, news of success elsewhere reached them. The team is really strong out in Rio and the medals are fantastic, Laugher said. To be able to add to that is a dream come true.In the diving camp we have added to the medals Tom Daley and Dan Goodfellow got [in the 10m synchronised diving on Monday] and there are a lot of good vibes in there. Its our most successful Olympics ever [in diving] and we have more individual events to come. There are hopefully more medals as well.Just 90 minutes later, Max Whitlock won Britains first individual mens all-around gymnastics medal since 1908; the one and only Games in which Great Britain topped the medal table. That Team GB have won more medals today makes it even better, Whitlock said. We are very strong, were such a big team, and hopefully we can go back to the village and everyone be proud of our achievements. It was a memorable day, one on which the team came alive.Credit must go to the sports and the individual athletes, British Olympic Association chief executive Bill Sweeney said. It was a pleasure to watch their performances and we are incredibly proud. We wont get carried away, but today has been a nice day for British sport.Thursday could bring more success with the start of track cycling, the sport in which Britain won seven golds, a silver and a bronze last time out. Other medal hopes include Katherine Grainger and Vicky Thornley in rowings double sculls, David Florence in the C2 canoeing, and Natalie Powell in the womens 78kg judo. There is womens individual all-around gymnastics, too, and gold potential in rugby sevens. Beyond that there is more reason for optimism with Andy Murray, canoe sprints and track and field holding high hopes. Now, whos up for Thantastic Thursday? Well work on the name... The lower tier of the School End of Queens Park Rangers Loftus Road was packed solid with a very festive-sounding Chelsea choral section in this particular part of South Africa Road London, W12. The finals are upon us, whether your league plays a two-week or a single-week championship format. So for those reading this column, the truth is your roster is almost assuredly in very good shape. Youve powered through the regular season and the early weeks of the postseason to come this far. Its not time to stir the pot dramatically and make sweeping changes. But for a variety of reasons, there may be some roster fine tuning this week, so lets look at a few options that can provide you with the finishing touch for your championship run.Dion Lewis, RB, New England Patriots (43.2 percent). Lewis played his largest role yet in a game for the Patriots since returning from injury; he led the team with 95 rushing yards in Week 15 and showed the type of elusiveness in the hole that made him such a key part of the offense in 2015. LeGarrette Blount is the drive finisher for this Patriots offense, but with a Week 16 matchup against the Jets, dont be surprised if Lewis stays busy.Ryan Griffin, TE, Houston Texans (2.8 percent). If C.J. Fiedorowicz sits out in Week 16 because of a concussion that prevented him from playing in Week 15, Griffin should be in line for another productive game. He had eight catches for 85 yards in Week 15, catching all of his targets. The Texans passing game got a lift when Tom Savage took over at quarterback against the Jaguars, and Griffin will be a usable tight end this week if Fiedorowicz is unable to suit up.Robby Anderson, WR, New York Jets (5.9 percent). Anderson has scored in double digits over each of his past three games, emerging as the most targeted Jets wide receiver, a role previously occupied by Brandon Marshall. Anderson is a speedy and tall rookie who has seemed to develop a rapport with Bryce Petty. With Ryan Fitzpatrick perhaps in line to start Saturday, the outlook for Anderson changes a bit, but if youre playing in a points-per-reception league with a need for a flex option, Anderson fits the bill.J.J. Nelson, WR, Arizona Cardinals (10.0 percent). Nelson is an exciting player who found the end zone for the fourth time in three games in Week 15. He also dropped another easy touchdown that wouldve gone for 50-plus yards. Hes a big play waiting to happen. While John Brown also got more involved in Week 15, theres an avenue for Nelson into your lineup: If youre concerned because youre facing a heavily favored opponent, Nelson offers the kind of swing-for-the-fences upside that you could need to pull the upset.San Diego Chargers D/ST (36.5 percent). The Seahawks and Ravens are regarded among the best defenses in the NFL, but the Chargers D/ST has done sommething that neither of them have in 2016: scored positive fantasy points in every game this season.dddddddddddd But the reason to add the Chargers this week is not because of the floor, its because of the ceiling. San Diego plays the Browns in Week 16, and only the Rams allow more points to opposing D/ST on average. The Chargers are a wise streaming option. The Bolts lead the NFL with 17 interceptions in 2016.Tyler Lockett, WR, Seattle Seahawks (24.3 percent). Looking for an upside play in your flex for your PPR league? Lockett is trending in the right direction; he has at least six targets in four straight games and a score in two of those past four. Hes a unique talent who can take it the distance on any given play. The Seahawks didnt generate a ton of offense the last time they faced the Cardinals, but dont count on Lockett being quiet Saturday.Cameron Meredith, WR, Chicago Bears (23.9 percent). Weve seen fantasy relevance from Meredith this season; he had a hot, two-game stretch with 20 catches and over 100 yards in consecutive games on Oct. 9 and 16. Its hard to trust a Bears receiver not named Alshon Jeffery?from week to week, since several have gotten involved since Matt Barkley took over at quarterback (and kick-started this offense). But based on the largest sample size of production and the skill set that shows up when watching him, Meredith is the best option of other Bears wideouts if youre in need of a flex play in a good matchup against Washington.Mike Gillislee, RB, Buffalo Bills (28.9 percent). The Bills have the most productive rushing offense in the league, and while LeSean McCoy is the catalyst, Gillislee also figures heavily into the mix. Specifically, he gets plenty of work at or near the goal line, as highlighted by his 3-yard touchdown run in Week 15. He has scored a touchdown in four of his past six games and is a flex consideration at running back for a standard scoring league with 12 or more teams. In a 10-team league, you likely have a more reliable, volume-based running back option.Travaris Cadet, RB, New Orleans Saints (.3 percent). Have you found yourself in a major pickle at running back? If so, and if you play in a PPR league, I think Cadet is a super-deep league add who can provide enough value if youre in need of a pickup at the position. He has at least seven PPR points in his past three games, collecting 13 total catches and scoring in Week 15. In a high-volume passing offense, Cadet has emerged as a factor in recent weeks. ' ' '
