Julio Teheran has actually had a pretty good spring so far and while you always have to take spring training results with a grain of salt, it’s still encouraging to see that he hasn’t fallen completely into the abyss just yet — even if the abyss is looming as he stands on the cliff’s edge. The adjustment that’s made this early success possible is actually a bit simple — he’s pitching from the stretch at all times. He’s said that pitching from the stretch has helped him from a command standpoint and the proof was in the pudding on Sunday as he went five innings and only gave up one run against a lineup that included Jose Altuve and Alex Bregman. If you tell any pitcher that they can improve by simply switching, then you’ll see that person take advantage of it and it’s clear that Teheran is going to ride this for as long as it works for him. If it does indeed work out then this would be a boon to the Braves and their rotation. The rotation still won’t be at full strength heading into the start of the season, but it’s not a complete case of gloom and doom. There’s hope for Julio now and that’s at least better than what we were thinking about Julio after the 2018 season came to a close.
