OAKLAND, Calif. -- Bartolo Colon never envisioned this, a share of the major league lead in wins two months past his 40th birthday and going on a year since he received a 50-game suspension for a positive testosterone test. Colon won his 14th game, backed by Jed Lowries homer and two-run single and a two-run drive by Stephen Vogt in the Oakland Athletics 6-4 victory against the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night. "I wouldnt have thought this," Colon said. "I have surprised myself right now because I didnt know I was going to share the lead with the other pitchers. I am proud." Colon, an All-Star, won his third straight decision while facing his former club. The right-hander earned the 2005 AL Cy Young Award with a 21-8 year for the Angels. Mike Trout hit a two-run homer in the first on a ball he crushed into the elevated seats in left-centre, then Colon settled in nicely against Los Angeles loaded lineup. Colon (14-3) allowed two runs and seven hits in six innings, struck out two and walked two. He has won 11 of 12 decisions since losing May 9 at Cleveland and has lost just once since turning 40 on May 24. "Id be lying if I said I thought hed be 14-3 right now," manager Bob Melvin said. After his Aug. 22 suspension last year carried into this season, Colon now is among more than a dozen players being investigated by Major League Baseball for ties to a Florida clinic accused of distributing performance-enhancing drugs. He is concentrating only on his pitching. On Friday, he helped the AL West-leading As bounce back from an 8-3 defeat in Thursday nights series opener. Lowrie homered in the bottom of the first to get the As to 2-1, then singled home two runs to put his team ahead in the second two batters after Eric Sogards tying single. Vogt connected in the sixth, and he thoroughly enjoyed catching Colon. The pitcher shook him off 10-12 times. "Its fun to watch him just move the ball around the zone, move the ball in and out," Vogt said. "Hes just got so much knowledge and experience to be able to bring to the table. He knows what pitch to throw and when, how to throw it and manipulate it and all that kind of stuff. He really is special." Jerry Blevins walked the first two Angels of the ninth. Grant Balfour relieved and allowed Albert Pujols two-run single. He struck out Josh Hamilton to end it for his 27th save after blowing his first opportunity since April 29, 2012, Tuesday night at Houston -- snapping his franchise-best streak of 44 saves in a row. Jerome Williams (5-7) lost his second straight start to the As while facing them for the fifth time this year. He yielded four runs and six hits in five innings. The As pushed his pitch count up in a hurry, and he threw 103 in all over five innings -- his fifth straight outing of five or fewer innings. "We need these guys to come out and give us a chance to win when they take the ball," manager Mike Scioscia said. "At times its been a little spotty." Williams lost his fifth straight decision and has a seven-start winless stretch since beating the Orioles in Baltimore on June 12. Williams, who pitched for Oaklands Triple-A Sacramento club in 2009, received a mound visit after Coco Crisp followed Sogards tying single in the second with a base hit. Crisp started a nice double play in the third when he caught Pujols fly and threw to second baseman Sogard to get Trout after he reached on an infield single. Crisp was "shocked" he made the play. "Just like any other fly ball, guys are going to try to tag on me because I dont have the strongest arm. Today, my arm actually felt pretty good," he said. "Thats not my forte." Said Colon with a grin: "He surprised the whole world with that throw, and the fans." Angels second baseman Tommy Field singled in the second for his first major league hit since Sept. 28, 2011, while with Colorado. NOTES: Crisp passed Jose Canseco for sixth place on Oaklands career stolen base list with 136. Reggie Jackson is fifth (144). ... ATLANTA -- The Washington Nationals can only hope Stephen Strasburg wont be sidelined very long with a strained right oblique. With Bryce Harper and Jayson Werth still ailing in an injury-filled season for Washington, the last thing manager Davey Johnson needed was for his ace to get hurt in the Nationals 3-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Friday night. But Strasburg lasted just two innings before leaving the shortest outing of his career. He will head back to Washington to have his side examined. "He was complaining of discomfort warming up, and it was more severe than the last time out," Johnson said. "Hes a gamer. He wanted to continue. But something like that -- and I saw him wincing with every throw he made -- but Im not going to take a chance with his arm. Thats the main concern." Craig Stammen pitched four perfect innings after Strasburg left, and Denard Span tripled twice and scored two runs to help the Nationals snap a two-game skid. The victory trimmed Washingtons second-place deficit in the NL East to 4 1/2 games behind the Braves, Atlanta has dropped two of three and four of six. Strasburg left with a 2-1 lead. He allowed two hits and one run -- a homer by Freddie Freeman -- with no walks and two strikeouts. "Its something where, the last few starts, Id feel it warming up and Id go out there and wouldnt feel anything," Strasburg said. "Tonight it was more the reverse. I started to feel it a little more." Stammen (3-1) shut down the Braves by striking out three and allowing no baserunners through the sixth. In the seventh, Tyler Clippard escaped a bases-loaded jam that he created by allowing an RBI single to Freeman that cut the lead to 3-2 and by hitting the next two batters he faced. Clippard settled down, though, and struck out Dan Uggla and Chris Johnson. Drew Storen pitched a scoreless eighth for the Nationals, and closer Rafael Soriano converted his 15th save in 18 chances by retiring Freeman on a flyout, striking out B.J. Upton and getting Brian McCann to ground out in the ninth. The Nationals took the lead in the first off Julio Teheran (3-2) when Span led off with a triple and scored on Steve Lombardozzis sacrifice fly. Washington went up 2-0 in the second. Roger Bernadina singled, advanced to third on Danny Espinosas single and scored on Kurt Suzukis fielders choice RBI. Freemans fifth homer in the second cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the second, but Strasburg struck out Evan Gattis on five pitches before McCann stepped in. Strasburg was behind two balls, no strikes when he grimaced after throwing a changeup. He flexed his shoulder before throwing the next pitch and sooon retired McCann on a groundout.dddddddddddd. Strasburg then struck out Uggla on five pitches, but his night was over. "Its just a little tight back there, but it is what it is," Strasburg said. "Ive been battling with it a little bit the last few starts. Davey and (trainer) Lee (Kuntz) thought it was a good decision to come out of the game and not let it progress anymore." Stammen retired all 12 batters he faced. He was replaced by a pinch-hitter in the top of the seventh. The Nationals took a 3-1 lead in the sixth when Span tripled again and scored on another sacrifice fly by Bernadina. Teherans night ended when Anthony Varvaro replaced him with a runner on second. Teheran allowed seven hits, three runs, one walk and a career-high nine strikeouts. Washingtons injury list this season has included Span, Ryan Zimmerman, Adam LaRoche, Espinosa, Wilson Ramos and Ross Detwiler. The Nationals have played just 10 games, winning six, with their projected starting lineup. "We seem to be having all kinds of problems, but well get through it," Johnson said. "Hopefully Stras wont miss too much time." Strasburgs recent numbers, though, have shown no signs of health problems. He began the night 2-1 with 0.96 ERA in his last four starts. Now the team has to wonder how much time he will miss. Washington shut down Strasburg on Sept. 7 last season to limit the workload on his surgically repaired arm, keeping him out of the NL playoffs. The top pick in the 2009 amateur draft, he underwent elbow ligament-replacement surgery on Sept. 10, 2010. "Its kind of hard when you know what youre going to feel after you throw the pitch," he said. "You just kind of go out there and trick your mind, saying its not going to happen. But it is what it is. I cant do anything about it. Got to take the next step and go back up to D.C. and have them look at it and see what happens." NOTES: Harper missed his fifth straight game with left knee bursitis.
