PHILADELPHIA -- A strong offence and a solid bullpen performance helped Cliff Lee overcome his worst start in two months. Humberto Quintero and Ryan Howard hit home runs to give Lee a five-run cushion, and the Philadelphia Phillies held on for a 5-4 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Friday night. Dan Uggla hit a three-run shot, and the Braves snapped Lees streak of 11 straight games pitching at least seven innings and allowing three earned runs or less. But Lee (10-2) still won his eighth straight decision. He allowed four runs and eight hits in 6 1-3 innings. "It was hot, but I felt I could continue to pitch," Lee said. He didnt have to. The bullpen bailed him out. J.C. Ramirez and Antonio Bastardo combined for five outs. Jonathan Papelbon finished for his 18th save in 22 tries. Right fielder John Mayberry Jr. helped Papelbon with a sliding catch on Brian McCanns sinking liner for the second out. "I felt he was spent. He perspired a lot," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said of Lee. "It happens sometimes to guys who can go deep and finish games." Paul Maholm (9-7) gave up five runs -- four earned -- and nine hits in six innings. Tim Hudson was scheduled to start for the Braves, but he was pushed back one day because of a stiff neck. Desperate to avoid falling further behind in the NL East standings, the Phillies (42-45) opened an important 10-game homestand before the All-Star break looking to gain ground. The first seven games are against the two teams above them in the division. "The only way to definitely gain ground on teams ahead of you is to beat them," Lee said. "We have to win this series and as many games as we can heading into the All-Star break." The division-leading Braves have lost three in a row. The Phillies have won three of four, including two of three at major league-leading Pittsburgh. Fifteen of Philadelphias last 75 games are against the Braves. Lee cruised into the seventh inning with a four-hitter before running into trouble. Lee hit Freddie Freeman, and Chris Johnson followed with a single. Uggla then hit a drive to left-centre to get the Braves within 5-3. "I threw five straight changeups," Lee said. "I tried to come up and in with a fastball. It was up, but not in." After Lee gave up a one-out double to McCann, pinch-hitter Reed Johnson singled to chase him. Ramirez came in and allowed a sacrifice fly to Andrelton Simmons that cut it to 5-4. Quintero drove an opposite-field shot out to right to make it 3-0 in the second. A Braves fan dropped the ball back onto the field, and Quintero stopped at second before being awarded the homer. The ruling was upheld after the umpires looked at a video replay. "It feels good to get this win," Quintero said. "We have to win the series." Howard connected in the third, hitting a towering shot way out to right-centre for his 11th homer. Quinteros RBI double drove in Delmon Young for a 5-0 lead in the sixth. Braves catcher Gerald Laird was ejected by plate umpire Angel Hernandez after getting called out on a pitch that appeared high and outside in the third. Laird was tossed after shouting an expletive as he walked toward the dugout. He turned around and ran at Hernandez, going nose-to-nose in a heated exchange while manager Fredi Gonzalez tried to calm him. Gonzalez also was ejected. "The catcher threw the ball back to the pitcher," Gonzalez said. "(Laird) was saying even the Phillies catcher knew it was a ball." A throwing error by first baseman Freeman gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead in the first. NOTES: Lee is 11-2 in last 14 starts against NL East opponents. ... Indias 75kg boxer Vikas Krishan is supremely confident that if he wins his quarterfinal bout on Monday, he will go on to clinch the Gold medal. Vikas will fight Bektemir Melikuziev of Uzbekistan for a place in the semifinals. Melikuziev, who finished second at the World championships in Doha last year, presents a massive hurdle for the Indian. The pair had clashed at the Asian Championships in Bangkok last year, a bout the Uzbek won on his way to clinching the title. Vikas is convinced Melikuziev will face a much better opponent this time around. With Manoj Kumar (64 kg) and Shiva Thapa (56 kg) ousted from contention, the countrys boxing campaign now solely relies on him. This fight is for the Gold medal, Vikas told ESPN. If I win this fight I am going to get the Gold. I want to go back to India either empty handed or with a Gold medal. If I win this bout, the pressure from my mind will be released and I can play freely, thats why I am saying this. Every opponent is good and the guys who reach this far are the best in the world. But still, once I am out of this pressure, I am going to do my best.I lost to him (at the Asian Championships) in a very close bout. The score was 2-1 and I lost one of those points due to a warning. I made mistakes in the past when I fought against him, now I have to concentrate on my speed. Now I am fully fit, at that time I was not in great shape because the Asian Championships wasnt a major competition as I was preparing for the World Championship. If the guy had fought me in the World Championship, I would have beaten him. Now I am in full form and can beat him.The 20-year-old Uzbek has been touted as one of the rising stars of the sport and was named the Best Male Boxer of 2015 by the Asian Boxing Confederation .Neither man will enjoy a height advantage in the contest with both standing 510 tall. Vikas, who had finished fifth at the last World Cup, believes he has improved significantly in recent months and has the weapons and tactical nous to take down his formidable rival.I have been playing competitiions continuously, he says.dddddddddddd We have competitions every month and those have been good. The training sessions have also been good. So I dont feel so much pressure coming into this competition. The Olympics is a great stage and everybody knows that India is hoping for a medal from me. I am surely going to do that.Vikas also has unfinished business to complete at the Olympics. In a well documented sequence of events, he was declared the winner of his pre-quarterfinal bout against Errol Spence of USA in the preliminary round of the 69kg category. However, the decision was overturned on appeal, leaving Vikas distraught. Four years later, he has arrived in Rio having moved up to the 75kg category and determined to erase that bitter memory. So driven is he by that moment that in his first round bout here against Charles Conwell, Vikas found an extra dash of motivation as his opponent was from the same country as Spence. The scene from the last Olympics was in my mind during my first fight when I was fighting against a boxer from the same country, he said. I dominated the fight and won easily. The only pressure was that of the Olympics, nothing more. If that guy had competed with me anywhere else, I would have knocked him down in the first round.Vikas was the last of the three Indian boxers to book his spot for the Olympics, only sealing his spot at the final qualifying competition in Baku, Azerbaijan last month. However, he has arrived in Rio bursting with the conviction that he can leave an indelible imprint on these Games. After the clinical dismantling of Conwell, Krishan was devastating against Turkeys Sipal Onder in his second round, ensuring his build up to the bout he has identified as the biggest challenge of the competition is completed smoothly. My first bout wasnt so great but then I improved a lot, he says. I have given 70-80% in my last fight. Hopefully, I can give 100% in my next fight.
