NEWTON, Iowa -- IndyCar Series leader Helio Castroneves pole-winning news conference lasted barely a minute and ranked among the more sheepish in recent history. Castroneves knew he wasnt going to remain on the front row for long. Castroneves claimed the pole for Sundays race at Iowa Speedway, but he will start 11th after an unapproved engine change. Still, it wasnt all bad news for Castroneves or Penske -- which claimed its third pole in seven Iowa races. Penske teammate Will Power will start first, and Castroneves still earned nine championship points by winning the top heat. Castroneves also extended his lead over defending champion Ryan Hunter-Reay to 25 points in the process. James Hinchcliffe of Oakville, Ont., will start second, followed by Marco Andretti, Scott Dixon and Ed Carpenter. "These points, its always good. Its always crucial when you are fighting for the championship, and every point counts," Castroneves said. This was the second straight year that the IndyCar series seeded the Iowa field with heat races. After receiving mixed feedback from drivers and fans, officials tweaked the formula this year. The runs were extended from 30 to 50 laps, and the heats were set by a single-lap qualifying run rather than practice times. The first race didnt produce a ton of excitement as Dixon and Takuma Sato advanced with relative ease. Castroneves cruised, as well, leading all 50 laps of his heat before being forced to go to a new engine. "The good news is my car, as you could see, is really fast. Anything could happen," Castroneves said. The second heat provided some much-needed drama. Graham Rahal and Simon Pagenaud battled furiously for second and final berth in the last heat, and Rahal passed Pagenaud and then Ed Carpenter to take first. The strong qualifying run was crucial for Power, who remains in 11th place after finishing second each of the past three seasons. "I really need to gain some points on those guys, Helio, Hunter Reay, everyone in front of me," Power said. "Theres a lot of people in front. But at some point the championship is going to become out of reach." The biggest concern about heat races was potential wrecks. Those fears were realized when James Jakes lost control and hit the wall two laps from the end of the second heat. Jakes was checked in the medical centre, released and cleared to drive Sunday, though he will start near the back. Hunter-Reay, who won last week at Milwaukee and last year at Iowa, was just 14th after qualifying. "You know, it was way off the mark. Weve been sitting on our own thumbs all day. We just missed it," Hunter-Reay said. "Were starting buried in the pack. We gave up points." Alex Tagliani of Lachenaie, Que., will start 12th. Bjorn, who had a 36-hole total of 8-under 134, made a testing six-foot putt to save par on the 16th and a birdie on the 17th before bogeying the final hole after a misjudged approach shot. American Kevin Streelman was in second place after shooting a 69. LAHAINA, Hawaii -- Georgetown was at its best in the first half, playing aggressive defense, feeding the hot hand of Rodney Pryor. The Hoyas were at their worst to start the second half, failing stops or shots to drop.Rather than folding, as they had in the past, the Hoyas gritted out a victory over a tough opponent.Pryor had 26 points and 10 rebounds, and Georgetown withstood a furious second-half rally to hold on for a 65-61 victory over No. 13 Oregon on Monday in the first round of the Maui Invitational. In the second half they came out and threw some blows, said Pryor, who had 18 points by halftime. We didnt get early stops that we needed and they got back into the game. But then we were able to take a deep breath, get some stops and get some baskets.Georgetown (1-2) led by 17 after a superb first half, capped by Pryors running 3-pointer at the buzzer. The Ducks (2-2) swarmed their way back, using pressure defense to create turnovers and easy baskets in transition.Unlike their loss to Maryland last week, the Hoyas weathered the Duck storm and will advance to the second round against No. 16 Wisconsin.LJ Peak added 17 points and hit two free throws with 2.7 seconds left to seal Georgetowns victory. Our guys did a good job not getting dejected and refocusing, Hoyas coach John Thompson III said.Oregon struggled the entire first half despite having leader Dillon Brooks in the lineup for the first time this season. The Ducks clawed their way back behind pressure defense, though didnt have enough to finish it off.Payton Pritchard led Oregon with 18 points. Brooks had eight points, including a long 3-pointer with 3.8 seconds left to get the Ducks within 2.As great a comeback as it was, we werent tough enough to finish it, Oregon coach Dana Altman said.Brooks didnt play in Oregons first three games while recovering from offseason foot surgery and Altman said he would limit the preseason All-Americans minutes in Maui.Brooks entered Mondays game about five minutes in with the Ducks struggling. He didnt do much to help them.Oregon needded six minutes to hit its first field goal and kept missing shots, going 7 for 29 from the floor in the first half.dddddddddddd Brooks was 0 for 3 and did not score. The Hoyas had their own problems early, but rallied behind Pryor. He hit two step-back 3-pointers late in the first half and closed it with a running, off-balance 3 at the buzzer to put Georgetown up 38-21.Give them credit. They came out fast and we made some mistakes at the start of the game, so we have to limit those, Oregon guard Casey Benson said.Second half, roles reversed. After solving Oregons extended pressure defense in the first half, the Hoyas couldnt shake it in the second.Georgetown missed its first 12 shots and the Ducks went on a 22-4 run to go up by one.Georgetown fought back, turning up its defensive pressure and used a 10-2 run to go up 53-45 with 3 minutes leftOregon tried to make a late run, but came up short.BIG PICTUREThe Hoyas showed off their inconsistencies in yet another game, but found a win to win this one after losing the previous two.The Ducks got their leader back, but still have plenty of work to do if theyre going to live up to the high preseason expectations. Perimeter shooting is a concern; Oregon went 4 for 17 from the 3-point arc after hitting 3 of 21 in a loss to Baylor.POLL IMPLICATIONSDepending on what happens the next two days in Maui, the Ducks could be looking at a precipitous fall in the poll, possibly even out of it altogether.BROOKS RETURNAltman stuck to his plan to limited Brooks minutes, only giving him 13 against the Hoyas. Brooks was superb on the defensive end, particularly on the press in the second half, and finishing 3 of 8 shooting. We held him to the 10 to 15 minutes that we thought wed play him, Altman said. And he was mad because he wanted to play more.UP NEXTGeorgetown will face No. 16 Wisconsin in Tuesdays winners bracket.Oregon faces Tennessee in the losers bracket on Tuesday.
