PHOENIX -- The first four starts for Homer Bailey since he returned from major elbow surgery after more than a year out of action went fine. The last two have seen the Cincinnati right-hander get hit hard early.Bailey (2-3) gave up four runs -- three earned -- and five hits in his one inning, and the Reds went on to an 11-2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday. After the game, he and manager Bryan Price revealed that Bailey is dealing with right biceps soreness. There are going to be peaks and valleys of this type of recovery from this elbow injury, Price said. You can tell when he has thrown the last couple of times out its just not the same. He is pitching 88 to 91 (mph) mostly, trying to create movement, throwing more two-seam fastballs, doesnt really have the teeth on the slider. It is just not as competitive as it needs to be in order to go out there and expect to get big league hitters out with some regularity.Baileys start came on the heels of a 2 1/3-inning outing on Aug. 22 in which he allowed six runs and nine hits in a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. It has been like that for two starts now and you can see the results are absolutely horrendous, Bailey said. Its not like you are going through a bunch of pain, its just frustrating you cant get the extension and finish the pitches that you want to.On Sunday, Yasmany Tomas homered, Welington Castillo drove in four runs and Archie Bradley earned his first win in more than a month for Arizona, which totaled 18 hits.We all know that this team can hit like that, so its just about time, Castillo said. We had plan to go out there and we executed.Bradley (5-8) allowed two runs and five hits with three strikeouts over six innings in his first win since July 27.Tomas delivered a pinch-hit three-run shot in the sixth inning off Reds reliever Ross Ohlendorf, his team-leading 27th of the season. It was the first pinch-hit home run of Tomass career, and 10 of his last 19 hits have been home runs. The Diamondbacks scored the four runs in the first off Baileyl on singles, force outs and an error.Jake Lamb was originally called out at home plate when he attempted to score on Brandon Drurys base hit to center field, on a throw from center fielder Billy Hamilton to catcher Ramon Cabrera. But the Diamondbacks challenged the tag play and umpires overturned the call on video review, ruling Cabrera dropped the ball for an error.A.J. Pollock had one of the five singles in the first for Arizona. Pollock, Michael Bourn and Chris Owings had three hits each for Arizona. The Reds pulled to 4-2 in the second on back-to-back solo home runs from Brandon Phillips and Scott Schebler. For Schebler, it was his third homer in two games. We realized early that Homer didnt have it, Price said. They got four in the first and you try to dig yourself out of the hole and we hit a couple of homers, then we werent able to find the right recipe and gave up seven.Pollocks two steals and Castillos sacrifice fly gave the Diamondbacks a 5-2 lead in the third.LEADOFF MANPhil Gosselin hit leadoff for Arizona on Sunday, giving star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt a day off. Gosselin had two hits and became the first Diamondbacks first baseman to start a game hitting leadoff since Conor Jackson on April 17, 2010.BIRTHDAY BALLGAMEU.S. Sen. Pollock played in his third straight game since his return from a fractured elbow, and Hale indicated hell keep Pollock in the lineup as long as he feels good. RALEIGH, N.C. -- North Carolina State coach Dave Doeren is hoping a new look can give the Wolfpack a needed lift in the Atlantic Coast Conference.Theres a new offensive coordinator. Theres also a quarterback battle for a team seeking a third straight bowl bid.It wasnt a change because I didnt like our offense, Doeren said. I wanted to be different than we were, more than anything. ... Weve got to be really creative. Weve got to do some things some other people dont do and weve got to put our players in positions where they can compete sometimes against guys that are better than them.N.C. State (7-6) has lost shootouts with Atlantic Division powers Florida State and Clemson -- both ranked No. 1 at the time -- over the past two seasons with Jacoby Brissett at quarterback. The Wolfpacks wins came against teams that were a combined 30-53 last year. With Brissett in the NFL, Doeren hired Eli Drinkwitz away from Boise State as the new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. N.C. State ran plenty of no-huddle, fast-paced snaps in its April spring game. The most pressing question now is who will run that attack this fall.Redshirt sophomore Jalan McClendon and redshirt freshman Jakobi Meyers battled during spring drills. Then N.C. State added graduate transfer Ryan Finley -- who had played under Drinkwitz at Boise State -- in May.We always talk about how were a unit, were trying to be the best unit we can be, Finley said, so were all in this together. Here are some things to know about N.C. State for the 2016 season:RUNNING STRENGTHThe return of senior Matt Dayes from a toe injury that sidelined him for the final five games is a big boost. Dayes averaged about 108 yards rushing per game to go with 12 touchdowns on the ground. He was limited in spring drills but is back to headline a potentially strong depth chhart includes talented youngsters Reggie Gallaspy II and Johnny Frasier.dddddddddddd And dont forget all-ACC do-everything threat Jaylen Samuels, who can line up in the backfield or out wide to create matchup problems.KICKING GAMEN.C. State must solve its kicking woes from last year. Kyle Bambard struggled throughout his freshman year, making 7 of 14 field goals with none longer than 37 yards. Bambard is battling UNC Pembroke graduate transfer Connor Haskins for the job in training camp.SEASON OPENERThe Wolfpack will look to stay unbeaten in openers under Doeren when William & Mary visits on Sept. 1. The Championship Subdivision program was picked to finish second in the Colonial Athletic Association behind five all-conference picks. Considering whats ahead on the schedule, the Wolfpack cant afford to start with a loss.KEY GAMESThe Wolfpacks schedule looks daunting. Notre Dame (Oct. 8) and Florida State (Nov. 5) loom as the big home games, while trips to reigning ACC champion Clemson (Oct. 15) and Coastal Division champion North Carolina (Nov. 25) dont look inviting, either. It just gives us more of an opportunity to show everyone that we can be a top contender, Dayes said.PREDICTIONN.C. States improvement from an 0-8 ACC season in Doerens first year has come through developing young talent thrust into the lineup early. There is more experience and depth here after 15 wins the past two seasons, including a defense that could be a strength with eight returning starters. But that tough schedule could cap the Wolfpack at six or seven wins.---Online:Follow Aaron Beard on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/aaronbeardap and the APs college football site at http://collegefootball.ap.org Wholesale NFL Camo Jerseys Wholesale NFL Camo Jerseys Cheap NFL Autographed Jerseys Jerseys NFL Cheap Wholesale Jerseys From China Jerseys From China Cheap Jerseys Online ' ' '
