NEW YORK – As the Blue Jays venture into Yankee Stadium for an important three-game series with their foes in pinstripes, there are a number of storylines to latch on to before considering who will take the mound for Toronto on Tuesday night. Mookie Betts Jersey . Its the first-place Blue Jays against the team closest to them in the American League East. Toronto enters the series with a four-and-a-half game lead on the Yankees. Its another chance, the second of what will be as many as six, to wave goodbye to New Yorks future Hall of Fame shortstop, Derek Jeter. Here in New York, the dulcet voice of the late, great public address announcer, Bob Sheppard, brings No. 2 to the plate. Jose Reyes is back in New York, too. He made his name over in Queens playing for the Mets. R.A. Dickey is here but wont pitch. He won the Cy Young award two seasons ago on the other side of the city. Oh, and dont forget about the Blue Jays rookies mound opponent on this Tuesday: a rookie himself, technically, the Japanese phenom Masahiro Tanaka, whos dominated the early days of his major league career like he dominated for years back home. Then there is Marcus Stroman. Its strange that this, essentially a homecoming for a young man raised in the Long Island town of Medford, is somewhat lost in the shuffle. Hes the 23-year-old who stunned general manager Alex Anthopoulos, blowing his bubble gum in the middle of his windup. The kid seems born for the spotlight, even if it will shine more brightly on others. "Im usually pretty good with dealing with things like that," Stroman said on Sunday. "I dont let anything get to me or get me overly excited or kind of get me out of my game. Im fine. Im in a good place mentally. I feel good going into it. I have kind of an off-day just to hang out with friends in the city and then it will be Game on Tuesday." Medford is a sleepy town, according to Stroman, more than an hour from New York City. Its closer to the upscale Hamptons, a drive of about 45 minutes. Medford has one high school, Patchogue-Medford High School, which Stroman attended before moving on to college at Duke University. The town will awaken this evening. Many of its inhabitants, in fact, will venture to Yankee Stadium to watch the hometown boy pitch. Stroman has purchased up to 70 tickets for close family and friends. He said hes been told by another 50 or 60 people theyve bought ducats. Hell have a throng of about 130 people here rooting him on. "Anytime you have an opportunity to pitch in front of a bunch of family and friends, its exciting," said Stroman. "I should have a lot of – a bunch of people texting me, bunch of friends from high school, college, a lot of people reaching out to me saying theyre going to be at the game so thats always exciting to pitch in front of people whove been there along the way." Stroman is 3-1 in his first year in the big leagues, 2-1 as a starter. Hes gone six innings in each of his first three starts, losing his last outing against the Twins. In two of those appearances, including the Minnesota defeat, he didnt walk a batter. He has impressed with his fastball. His breaking stuff, particularly his curveball, has baffled opposing hitters. Hes developing his changeup. Hes not developing confidence. He already has it. His coaches brag about it. "I certainly dont see him as a guy whos going to nibble and pitch around guys," said pitching coach Pete Walker. "Hes definitely on the attack. His walks have been down and I would like to think that thats going to continue with him. He certainly trusts his stuff. Theres no doubt about that." Growing up, Stroman went to Yankees games at the old stadium and saw the Mets at Shea. He didnt cheer for either team. He admired players. Like most native New Yorkers, he watched Jeter in awe. On Tuesday night, hell pitch to Jeter. He doesnt know what to expect. "I cant even tell you," said Stroman. "Im sure itll settle in once Im kind of on the mound but Im pretty sure it will be surreal." Bill Lee Jersey . Jonathan Crompton led the team to a 40-9 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Manitobas Jeff Stoughton and B.C.s John Morris won their final round-robin games Thursday night to finish the Tim Hortons Brier preliminary robin at 9-2. Albertas Kevin Koe sits at 9-1 with only one game left Friday morning, after a 9-6 win over Prince Edward Island Thursday afternoon. If he wins Friday, the final three in order will be Alberta, Manitoba and B.C. All thats up for grabs is the fourth and final playoff spot. Saskatchewan and Quebec, at 6-4, are leading the race but Newfoundland and New Brunswick are hanging in at 6-5. Saskatchewan and New Brunswick play Friday morning. "Theres still some hope," Quebec skip Jean-Michel Menard said of his chances to reach the three vs. four playoff game, although he has to face Alberta. One scenario could even see four teams needing to work through tiebreakers Friday, if both Saskatchewan and Quebec lose. "If both of the teams lose theres four teams at 6-5, which looks like a messy tiebreaker, so hopefully we dont have to go through that," Menard said. Saskatchewans Steve Laycock knows his path to the playoffs. "Win our last and either get some help from Alberta or play a tiebreaker," said Laycock. Morris said they will be happy to get into the playoffs through the three vs. four game. He got passed by Manitoba Thursday morning when he lost 7-6 to Stoughton in an extra end. "Were prepared to go through the three-four game were prepared to go to the one-two game, it doesnt matter," he said after his final game at night. "If we have to play a few extra games in this spiel, well get our moneys worth." Stoughton noted the strange way the tiebreaker system works that could actually change the order if Alberta loses to Quebec Friday. B.C. would move into top spot leaving Alberta in second and Stoughton in third. "Its kind of interesting, I mean Koe can actually pick who hes going to play," said the Manitoba skip and three-time Brier winner. He admitted that isnt a likely outcome, since Koe will be trying hard to win to get hammer and choice of rocks going into the page playofffs. Dustin Pedroia Jersey. Manitoba gave up three in the first end to Ontario Thursday night but quickly gained control again to come back and win 8-6. "It seems like the theme of the week but year. "We got up early and then I just threw one bad shot and gave up a three ender (and) after that they started making a lot of shots," he said. "We definitely could have made it easier on ourselves." But with a win Friday in their final game against Quebec, he gets hammer and choice of rocks for the one vs. two playoff. Its an experience Koe says he has never had, either in 2010 when he won the Brier or in 2012 when he came second. "Itll be a different feeling, not having our backs against the wall," Koe said. Stoughton started the Brier with four wins -- though none were decisive -- before losing to Alberta and Quebec. He admitted both he and third John Mead needed to pick up their game. The Thursday morning game wasnt mistake-free for Manitoba or B.C., but the last and most costly miss was made by the hometown favourites. After exchanging deuces in the first two ends, it was singles until B.C.s Jim Cotter missed a key double with his last rock in eight, letting Stoughton draw to the button for two to go ahead 6-5. "It was a real tough double," said Morris. "We missed it by a hair." Cotter was a little happier Thursday night as they beat Laycock and Saskatchewan 6-3. "We bounced back," he said. "We had a solid team game. We were definitely a little better than this morning." Greg Balsdon and Ontario were sitting at 4-6 with one game left to play friday morning after losing to Manitoba. The Northwest Territories-Yukon team of Jamie Koe was tied with Eddie MacKenzie out of P.E.I. at 3-7 with one game left, Jeff Currie and Northern Ontario were finished at 2-9 and Nova Scotias Jamie Murphy was winless at 0-10 with their final game against Ontario Friday.
