All three became Olympic divers -- Rio is Boudias third Games and Johnsons debut, while Dunnichay competed at Beijing in 2008. They wouldnt sing in the car, though. Instead, Boudia says he would turn the radio to a rap or hip-hop station.Steele was just a little giggly kid in the back seat, Boudia said. And I would turn up the music and try to be this punk kid that I was.Boudia was a bit of a different character back then. Now he is a husband, a father, a devoted Christian, an author, an Olympic multimedalist and a mentor to Johnson.And Monday, Boudia and Johnson twisted and flipped off the 10-meter platform with such unity that they earned silver medals in synchronized diving. It was the first Olympic medal for Johnson and the third for Boudia, who won gold and bronze at London in 2012. Said Boudia: Now Ive got all the colors.That the two did so is impressive given that death was once a near possibility in their lives. As he writes in his recently published book, Boudia used to drink and smoke and fell into such a deep depression in 2009 that he considered suicide. Johnson, meanwhile, smacked his head on the diving platform so hard seven years ago that he was nearly killed.I scalped myself, Johnson said. I needed 33 staples and had a tube in my head to drain the chlorine out. My coach got in the water and held my head together so I didnt bleed out.When something like that happens in your life -- a near-death experience -- you dont know where youre going to be going with your life. I could have stopped diving. I could have gone back to middle school and played different sports, like football or soccer. But the fact that God gave me the ability to stick with it and persevere and not have fear and anxiety with my life, Im so grateful.Christian faith is important to both divers, who have partnered in the event for the past four years. Prior to dives, they will say 4:6 for the Philippians bible verse that starts out: Do not be anxious about anything ...Just because Ive been to three Olympics and Ive won a gold medal doesnt mean Im not vulnerable to anxiety, Boudia said. And I felt a lot of pressure going into this week, almost to the point where it was giving me a lot of anxiety and I had to step away.Instead, he and Johnson stepped onto the platform and finished second, with 457.11 points, to China gold medalists Chen Aisen and Lin Yue (496.98). Tom Daley and Daniel Goodfellow of Great Britain took bronze (444.45).Boudia and Johnson say they dont pay attention to the scores while they are diving, so they didnt know what place they were in heading into their sixth and final dive. They simply bumped fists, told each other 4:6 and gave it their best. After the dive, they looked up at the scoreboard and saw that they had medaled.And after taking the podium to receive the silver medals, they spoke with reporters at the pool before being driven to the press center. As short as that drive was, it had to have been a much more emotional trip than those rides to practice in Indiana.Even if David didnt have an Olympic gold medal, hed be the perfect person to take me on this journey, said Johnson, who attends Purdue, as did his two carpool mates. Weve been partners over the last few years, and Ive been looking up to him since even before he made his first Olympics. ...
