WINNIPEG -- Wade Miller has pressed the firing button again. Lorenzo Carter Jersey . The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced Wednesday the firing of head coach Tim Burke. Miller said the move was made Tuesday, after the "acting" tag was removed from his title of president and chief executive officer. When Miller was put in the acting role in August, his first move was axing general manager Joe Mack. Although Kyle Walters is the teams acting GM, Miller explained why he let Burke go rather than wait for a GM to decide his fate. "I believe that it was the right step for this organization," he said at Wednesdays press conference. "Typically, a new general manager is going to want to hire his own person, and I believe now that weve set that path for a new general manager to be able to make his own determination of who his head coach should be. "And also, that I didnt feel it was appropriate to have Tim waiting for the next three or four or five weeks in determining what his future was with the organization." Burke became Winnipegs interim head coach in August 2012 after Mack fired Paul LaPolice. He was given the job last November. The Bombers finished with a league-worst 3-15 record this season, tying the clubs lowest mark in an 18-game season. They were 7-21 under Burkes leadership. All the assistant coaches are on contracts that are up this year, Miller said, adding hes open to Burke staying with the team because hes got good character and has excelled as a defensive boss. Burke reportedly had a year left on his contract. "I think that wed be lucky as an organization to have Tim back as a defensive co-ordinator," Miller said. "I think that thats a decision that the new head coach and general manager will make, but that is definitely something that Tim and I discussed." Burke is receptive to that and wants to meet the new head coach, said Miller, wholl be involved in the interview process with the GM. "Ive really enjoyed my time in Winnipeg and am grateful for the opportunity this franchise gave me," Burke said in a press release. "The fan support in this city and province is just really remarkable and it is one of the greatest things I can take away from this experience in Winnipeg." Miller acknowledged Burke was in "an extremely tough spot when he took over." And it got worse this season. Mack kept often-injured Buck Pierce as the teams starting quarterback, and predictably Pierce was lost to injury early this season. His young backups didnt flourish, Mack was fired and then Pierce was traded to B.C. in September. Offensive co-ordinator and quarterbacks coach Gary Crowton was fired after Mack and replaced by former Hamilton head coach Marcel Bellefeuille, whod been added to the staff the week before as a consultant. Miller didnt view Winnipegs disastrous season as a negative to finding someone to replace Burke. "I think you get an opportunity to come make a mark for yourself," he said. "Its not going to happen overnight, but the head coach and general manager are going to need to have a direction and a plan to get us to be competitive every week." The Bombers will have some competition searching for a head coach as there are also vacancies in Edmonton and Ottawa, while Montreal GM Jim Popp took over as the Alouettes head coach when Dan Hawkins was fired earlier this season. Miller said the GM the team hires, which is two to four weeks in the offing, would have a list of candidates theyd want to pursue as a head coach. Some names that have surfaced include Calgary offensive co-ordinator Dave Dickenson, Saskatchewan quarterbacks coach Khari Jones, B.C. offensive co-ordinator Jacques Chapdelaine and Toronto defensive co-ordinator/assistant head coach Chris Jones. Dickenson is considered a desirable candidate, although its believed he doesnt want to break his family and professional ties in Calgary. Khari Jones has strong ties to the Bombers. The former quarterback is in the clubs hall of fame and he and Miller played together and are partners in Booster Juice franchises. "Im not going to talk about potential candidates," Miller said. "People that know me know that I care about being competitive and personal relationships wouldnt impact decisions that I make." If the Bombers are looking for someone with head coaching experience, a list might include former Bombers boss Doug Berry (Montreal) and Kavis Reed, who was recently fired by Edmonton and is a former Winnipeg defensive co-ordinator. The firing of LaPolice, now a TSN broadcaster, was also called a bad move by many Bomber fans. "If youve been a head coach before, is that a good thing or a bad thing, who knows?" Miller said. "So I think its important to find the right person, and (having) head coach experience is important, but not a deal-breaker, either." He did know what the right person will hopefully bring to the club. "Bring an attitude, bring leadership, bring a vision of where we need to go, along with the general manager," Miller said. Riley Dixon Giants Jersey . Meeks has agreed to a $19.5 million, three-year deal with Detroit, a person familiar with the situation said Tuesday night. The person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because free agents cant sign contracts until the leagues moratorium ends July 10, also said Cartier Martin had agreed to a one-year contract with the rebuilding franchise. Kareem Martin Giants Jersey . The 17-year-old had four goals and four assists in 38 games for Liberec in the Czech pro league this past season. Zacha had three goals and two assists in seven games at the world mens under-18 championship in April when the Czech Republic took the silver medal. http://www.giantsrookiestore.com/Giants-Riley-Dixon-Jersey/ . - The Minnesota Vikings have ruled Christian Ponder out for Sundays game at Baltimore, because the quarterback has not yet passed all of his post-concussion tests.FORT WORTH, Texas -- When qualifying ended at Texas Motor Speedway, Chase Elliott hopped a fence and went on his way without a single fan bothering to stop him for an autograph or picture. Dale Earnhardt Jr. watched the 18-year-old go by largely ignored and figured those days were numbered. "I thought to myself, I know hes going to win one day or another, and then just start railing off run after run after run and become the next best thing," Earnhardt said hours later. "It aint going to be long until hes going to be swarmed with attention." Boy, Earnhardt had that pegged. Elliott used a strong move on the outside to pass Kevin Harvick for the lead Friday night and then sailed away for his first career Nationwide Series victory. The 18-year-old won in his sixth career start and is the second youngest winner in series history. Hes roughly four months older than Joey Logano, who was 18 years and 21 days when he won his first career Nationwide race in 2008. Elliott won in a Chevrolet for JR Motorsports, driving the No. 9 as a tribute to his father, 1988 Cup champion Bill Elliott. "I cant believe it, just to have the opportunity to race with these guys at JR Motorsports, just to have this opportunity is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for any racer who wants to make it to the top," Elliott said. "It just means the word for me to be here." Elliott became the fourth driver in Nationwide history to earn his first series victory at Texas, joining Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kurt Busch and Trevor Bayne. The victory continues the youth initiative in NASCAR as first-time winners have now won consecutive races for the first time since 2008. Two weeks ago, 21-year-old Kyle Larson scored his first career win at California. For his efforts? Elliott gets to return home and go to school on Monday as he continues to finish his senior year of high school. "I guess it will just be a normal Monday. Nobody likes Mondays," Elliott said. "Im sure it will be the same old deal, have a bunch of homework to do when I get back and get ready to go to Darlington." The win wowed Elliotts father, and back home in Dawsonville, Ga., the siren outside the local pool room wass blaring throughout the town to signify another local boys big victory. Nate Solder Giants Jersey. "Im about speechless," Bill Elliott said in Victory Lane. "I felt like Chase could do it. Ive watched him on Late Model team too much -- I know how good the kid really is. "To come here, to never have been to some of these places, like Las Vegas, California and now here at Texas, and come out and beat the kind of guys youve beat -- Ill tell you what, youve done a heck of a job." As a sign of how much respect Elliott already has among his peers, he was met following the win on pit road by Harvick, Larson and Kyle Busch. Then six-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson came to Victory Lane to congratulate him. "Its pretty awesome to see him succeed, I knew it was just a matter of time," said team co-owner Earnhardt Jr. "He has so much composure and ability and is years ahead of guys that age. And hes learning so much on the fly. Hes learning faster than you can teach him whats going on." Kyle Busch, a 65-time race winner in the Nationwide Series, finished second. He was third two weeks ago when Larson won, and hasnt seemed to mind these defeats. "These are the guys that are growing up and are young and being able to run hard and run strong and run with the best of them," said Busch. "Its neat to see them being successful and running with the best of them. I hate to lose, but its still cool to see the younger guys have the opportunities to win races and when they do, they seem to make it look good and win in style, so congrats to Chase." Elliott, who led four times for 38 laps, was strong Friday night and passed car owner Earnhardt Jr. for the lead at one point. But he was second behind Harvick on the final restart with 23 laps to go, and flirted several times with making a pass for the win before finally completing the move with a strong outside pass. "That was wild," said third-place finisher Larson. "Hed been trying to make it work and he must have had an extreme run that one time, got to Harvicks quarter panel and made him loose. From there on, I knew he was probably going to win the race unless we got a caution."
