Karolina Pliskova, 3,981 pointsPliskova is among the leading newer names of the season, defeating Williams and reaching the final of the US Open. She just needs a couple more wins to secure her first appearance in the WTA Finals.6. Garbine Muguruza, 3,558 pointsMuguruza should be higher given that she won her first Slam this season, but inconsistency means that shes still looking for a berth at Singapore. She can do it by reaching the final in Beijing, where shes the defending champion.7. Dominika Cibulkova, 3,495 pointsThe Slovakian pocket rocket has been building through the season. She reached the final at Wuhan; another big showing could get her a first appearance at Singapore.8. Madison Keys, 3,137 pointsThe 21-year-old has quietly been having a very good season, which is why shes in contention for a final eight position. She needs a title at Beijing to get into the event for the first time -- or a deep run that could allow her to stay in contention at subsequent tournaments.9. Carla Suarez Navarro, 3,052 pointsAn opening-round defeat at Beijing likely means no final-eight spot unless she sweeps the next two weeks.10. Svetlana Kuznetsova, 2,881 pointsKuznetsova has been having a resurgent season and is coming off a semifinal at Wuhan. Shell need the same or more at Beijing or some deep runs at subsequent tournaments, depending on what others around her do.11. Johanna Konta, 2,861 pointsKontas consistent climb this season has given her a first look at final-eight contention, but she needs at least a semifinal and likely a final.
