DUBLIN, Ireland -- Martin ONeill was hired as Ireland coach on Tuesday and will have former Manchester United captain Roy Keane as his assistant in a box-office pairing tasked with reviving the teams fortunes. The 61-year-old ONeill returned to management eight months after the Northern Irishman was fired by Premier League club Sunderland, while Keane has been a TV pundit since leaving as Ipswich manager in 2011. Keanes appointment is a surprise, as the outspoken former midfielder has had a volatile relationship with the Football Association of Ireland and walked out of the 2002 World Cup without kicking a ball. "Today, the FAI board is appointing two Irish legends as manager and assistant manager of our national team," FAI chief executive John Delaney said. Bone spurs in his foot had proved to be a constant annoyance going back to his time in college at Alabama. However, Norwood had always just kept his head down and played through the pain. But it was becoming too large an issue to manage any longer for the wide receiver. It didnt affect Norwood while he was running pass routes, but if he wasnt constantly moving and keeping the area loose it become painful. "When Im just standing around pretty much not doing anything, thats when it (started) getting stiff and sore," Norwood said. "Then when its time for me to go back in its impossible to move." Norwood had surgery in August to remove the bone spurs in his foot and didnt practice or play for the remainder of the preseason. He returned to practice last week prior to Seattles season opener against the Green Bay Packers, but was held out as he wasnt ready to play. But coach Pete Carroll saw enough from Norwood over the off-season in OTAs and minicamp to get a good sense for the player he is. "Hes such a natural football player that we felt like we understood his ability," Carroll said. "Right away we just had a real sense for him. "We felt pretty confident about that right off the bat, within the first few days we were out there. Hes got a verry versatile package that hes bringing to us so were really happy about that.
