(Champions!) into the early hours of Monday morning after their countrys 1-0 extra-time victory over host France delivered its first ever major football title.Others rushed to the Champs-Elysees avenue to celebrate, waving flags and dancing to the sound of an accordion player wearing a lime-green Portugal shirt.It wasnt all celebrations. A row of white police vans kept fans away from the landmark Arc de Triomphe as fireworks let off nearby lit up the night sky and riot police brandishing batons and shields broke up some scuffles among fans.Those who managed to get tickets for the final at the Stade de France celebrated in the stadium long after the final whistle as captain Cristiano Ronaldo, a Portugal flag wrapped around his waist and a broad smile on his face, hobbled around the ground on his injured left knee hugging and repeatedly kissing the trophy. On the streets around the stadium, the sound of car honking horns mingled with police sirens and singing supporters.Dejected French fans, meanwhile, quickly headed for the exits as the month-long tournament ended in heartbreak.In downtown Paris, France supporter Nicolas Floch could barely accept his teams defeat.The Portuguese didnt deserve this, he said.But, you know, thats sport.
