MINNEAPOLIS -- Phil Hughes carved up a lineup for the second straight outing, and this time the New York Yankees actually gave him some run support to reward him for his efforts. Hughes appears to be finding himself on the mound of late, and it couldnt come at a better time for the Yankees with Hiroki Kuroda suddenly ailing. Robinson Cano homered for the third straight game and Hughes gave up one run on six hits in seven innings, lifting the New York Yankees to a 7-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night. Hughes (4-7) struck out three and walked two. "You want to keep that ball rolling," said Hughes, who gave up two runs in eight innings of a 2-0 loss to Kansas City last week. "Hopefully its the start of a good stretch I can roll off here." Kuroda left the Twin Cities to get an MRI on his left hip flexor. Manager Joe Girardi said the test came back clean, but Kuroda will miss his next scheduled start on Friday as a precaution. Ivan Nova will start in his place and Kuroda will be evaluated after that. "He was a little tender after the game Sunday," Girardi said. "Its good news. He said he felt better today, but we thought wed get it checked out." Kuroda is 7-6 with a rotation-leading 2.95 ERA this season. Cano followed up a two-homer performance Monday by going 2 for 4 with three RBIs and Alberto Gonzalez had two hits and three RBIs as well for the Yankees. New York has broken out for 17 runs in the first two games of the series to snap a five-game skid. Samuel Deduno (4-3) gave up three runs on five hits in six innings for the Twins. Brian Dozier had a two-run double in the ninth, but the Twins couldnt get much going against Hughes and lost for the eighth time in 11 games. Mariano Rivera got one out in the ninth for his 27th save. Hughes entered the outing with three straight losses, tying the longest skid of his career. But the Yankees did not give him a single run of support in his previous two starts. Without injured stars Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira and Curtis Granderson, the Yankees have struggled mightily to sustain any kind of offence. They made up for it on Tuesday. Cano is the only mainstay still standing, and hes starting to put this nameless lineup on his back. He has hit four homers in the last three games, the last one a 405-foot, three-run drive onto the veranda behind the right field bleachers that broke the game open in New Yorks four-run seventh inning. But it was the light-hitting Gonzalez who got the Yankees going. Starting at shortstop for the injured Jayson Nix, Gonzalez had not driven in a run since joining the Yankees from the Chicago Cubs. Gonzalez got on the board with a two-run double down the right field line in the fifth inning. Deduno then misplayed a slow roller up the first baseline from Ichiro Suzuki, bobbling the ball just before it was set to roll foul and allowing Gonzalez to score for a 3-1 lead. Gonzalez then made a superb play in the field, running on a dead sprint with his back to home plate and laying out at the last second to snare a shallow pop fly from Joe Mauer that would have dropped in for a bloop single. "I feel very happy, very pleased to finally get the opportunity to be able to support my team," Gonzalez said through an interpreter. "Finally, the moment I was waiting for." Mauer snapped an 0-for-18 skid with an RBI single in the third inning to get the Twins on top 1-0. The Twins had a golden chance to extend the lead in the fourth inning when they opened with runners on second and third and none out. But Hughes steadied himself, striking out Chris Parmelee and Aaron Hicks and getting Pedro Florimon to groundout to end the inning unscathed. "To get out of that inning it felt like it really swung the momentum in our favour just to get out of that inning without putting up a score and give our guys a chance to come back from that," Hughes said. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire agreed. "That took the wind out of our sails," he said. Hughes only allowed two baserunners the rest of the way to pick up just his second victory since May 10. And two, Im learning more about the quarterback position every day than I ever have.Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly echoed those thoughts, saying that a few month away from the gridiron can declutter a players mind and help him think outside the box, a trait more valued for a quarterback than perhaps any other position in team sports.It keeps you sharp in competitiveness, in team sports, competing all year-round, Kelly said. After so much interest from college football coaches forced Kizer to shut down his pitching arm -- which Mielcarek said maxed out in the 80s -- his sophomore year, Meilcarek put him in the outfield and hit him cleanup.Kizer threw a bullpen session for an assistant during his junior year, Mielcarek said, prompting a heart-to-heart between coaches over the budding stars use.One of our [assistant] coaches came in and said, Coach, DeShone -- we need to use him, Mielcarek recalled. And I said, Seriously? And I named three schools coming in that he was going to be auditioning for to throw for football, and I said, We havent used him all this time. What are we going to do now? Now, he wasnt 6-8 like Magic was, but he had peripheral vision and the ability to find open guys, and it was really uncanny because I had never seen anything like that before.Kizers father, Derek, played basketball at Bowling Green, and Welling said he thinks DeShone couldve surpassed his father at the college level.If there was one knock on Kizer, it was a suspect jump shot that he didnt get enough time to work on.When you go from 15 football games a year and then you go to a 25-30-game basketball schedule and then you go into a 25-30 (game) baseball schedule and then you have summers where everybody wants you to do summer activities, you really dont have time for player development like DeShone really needed, Welling said. If he had gotten that, I have no reason to believe that he couldnt have been recruited by the Big Ten, ACC or Big East.Kizers Notre Dame teammates echo that sentiment, with receiver C.J. Sanders coming away impressed by the paradox of Kizers hoops game whenever they play pick-up.Hes an athletic guy for his size, thats whats most surprising, Sanders said. Hes a big guy, like (230 pounds). Being able to move like that playing basketball is crazy.As a prep sophomore, Kizer was a captain. As a senior, he was league player of the year and third-team All-Ohio thanks to a stat-sheet-stuffing line of 11 points, 5.6 rebounds and 6.8 assists per game, according to the Toledo Blade.Lines like those were all the more amazing considering he often got a late start thanks to football playoff runs that bled into winter sports.Hes a guy that had a state tournament championship game on Friday night, and Sunday evening hes practicing basketball within two days with no reps, Welling said. Thats how anxious he was to get on the floor.The later, the better?Kizer may have been good enough to sign with Notre Dame, but he was only ESPN RecruitingNations 16th-ranked dual-threat quarterback in the 2014 class. Did his well-rounded background make it more difficult to master sports signature position?To go through all three sports in high school, I never really locked into one, so theres a lot of stuff that I wasnt able to learn in high school where people have preached it since theyve been 8 years old, Kizer said. So a lot of that new stuff got put on me my redshirt freshman year when I was mature enough to learn from it, and now its kind of put me at a higher learning curve now that Im in my 20s where things are a little easier to understand.Kizer is 9-4 as a college starter and, if all breaks right, could play on Sundays next fall. More than two years after Kizers signing day, 11 of the 15 QBs ranked ahead of him have switched either schools or positions.Is all this a credit to Kizers prep approach? Or does his college success just speak to his individual makeup?That mind works like a computer, Welling said of Kizer. He can retain stuff in basketball that you had to go over and over and over things and hopefully you think theyll get it in some point in time. In his case, he didnt have to do that. If you did it once, he had it.His process-ability skills are off the charts, and I think when you throw those three different sports together and youre processing like he has the ability to do, I would agree with him 100 percent that hes probably benefited from all three sports.
