If you believe everything you read in the final days leading up to the draft, you’re bound to be disappointed. Franchises will attempt to “leak” information to the media in order for surrounding teams in the draft order to react proactively against them (trading up for a player right ahead of them). This manipulation in turn works in the original team’s best interest, leaving the player they “actually” wanted all along there for the taking. This is the strategy that most teams use, and they may claim to do so even when they didn’t actually to generate positive PR. In regards to the Bengals specifically, any noise you may hear involving draft plans is likely manufactured by none other than the brass that makes up the front office at Paul Brown Stadium. So when there’s talk about the Bengals actually considering taking a quarterback with the 11th overall pick, two likely realities become possible.Timing is everything. In recent years Cincinnati has been on the record as open to target every position in the first round — except for quarterback. That plan of attack has seen Patrick Mahomes, Deshaun Watson and Lamar Jackson fall past the Bengals’ first round picks in the last two drafts. Acquiring first-round quarterbacks is almost always for the aggressive, not the passive, but that could change this month. With the Bengals likely staying put at 11th overall, they could be the first team since 2013 to draft a first-round quarterback outside of the top three picks without trading up.In addition to that, all three quarterbacks are great candidates to watch and learn behind a veteran for a season before having the torch passed to them. Regardless of when the Bengals draft a quarterback, Dalton will be the starter in 2019. The agenda will remain unspoiled.The timing is right for the Bengals to be focusing on the days beyond Dalton, and that’s where the weight of this rumor being truthful resides. But there’s always the other side of the coin.Dalton may have just two years left on his deal, but 2019 might just be the ultimate prove-it season for him. Owner Mike Brown has stated they will not negotiate an extension for him this offseason, and you’d have to think that the ever-growing quarterback market may put Dalton out of the Bengals’ price range if he hits free agency. It would be unconventional for a team that just hired a mostly-new coaching staff and signed just one new starter in free agency Cheap Rodney Anderson Jersey , but the Bengals may still feel they’re going all-in to win as soon as possible. Would that involve using the 11th overall pick on a backup for Dalton? Odds point to no. The possibility of the Bengals leaking this information to the league so a desperate team moves in front of them to draft a quarterback cannot be dismissed — it should actually be accepted as the most likely explanation. It’s entirely possible that the Bengals do have interest in taking a quarterback, but simply do not have interest in any of the quarterbacks available this year. Remember, timing is everything.At the very least, it’s refreshing to approach the draft with the hope that a quarterback is Cincinnati’s first draft pick. Other needs such as linebacker and defensive line should obviously be addressed early, but neither position alters the game more than the one under center. In a recent ESPN article, opposing defensive coaches said several remarks about Gronkowski’s aging body and athletic traits.And perhaps most importantly.In many ways, those quotes could also be applied toward Jimmy Graham and his first season in Green Bay. It seems hard to envision Graham re-discovering his Pro Bowl self in 2019, but he, like Gronk, remains a player with a big body that can get into space and cause mismatches. Unfortunately, the Packers failed to use these strengths throughout the 2018 season. Once a feared runner in the seams and a red zone nightmare, Graham instead was confined many times to crossing routes over the middle and short sideline out routes. His large frame was rarely used to win 50-50 balls in the end zone and, really, was rarely targeted at all with just eight red zone targets. Eight!And while watching Gronkowski in the Super Bowl on Sunday did not provide insight into how to fix that specific error, it did shed light on how to use the 32-year old veteran’s size in other creative patterns. Here are two of those examples coming in a critical fourth quarter.The tight end wheel routeWith under 10 minutes to play Womens Quinten Rollins Jersey , New England needed a play to jumpstart a stunted offense and begin a go-ahead drive. The Patriots did just that on first down by involving Gronkowski. Although he is a far better run blocker than Graham and can deceive defenses by lining up in a two-point stance, Gronk was able to hold up Samson Ebukam just enough before shedding away from Ebukam and getting downfield. The wheel route isolated Gronk in space down the right sideline, allowing Tom Brady to place a perfectly-thrown ball in his tight end’s hands with just one step on the defender. Gronkowski may not be the fastest target and Ebukam may have jammed him, but the Patriots’ largest weapon came up with a monumental play. If Green Bay ever attempted a wheel route with Graham last season, it was not often. However, it could be one of those plays the Packers draw up for third-and-short and other crucial situations. While Graham is not an in-line blocking threat, the Packers could at least use him in that position as a decoy earlier in games to set up the wheel route later on. With his size and ability to run past most linebackers if he gains separation, Graham would be a good fit for the route if Aaron Rodgers can put the ball where he wants it.The seam from the slotThe seam is a concept many thought the Packers would deploy heavily the moment Graham signed on. And though Green Bay used it occasionally, Rodgers and Graham rarely connected.After feeding Gronkowski with the wheel route just a few plays earlier, Brady and the Patriots used a two-tight end set for a stretch of several plays to march down the field. With Gronk in the slot, New England ran and passed the ball with ease. And when the Los Angeles defense was at its breaking point, Brady sought out Gronk for a decisive punch. Brady didn’t hesitate to throw to his tight end in single coverage, dropping the ball 29 yards downfield into his hands before the safety could arrive. Again, Gronkowski still had just enough speed to beat his solo defender and used his height and length to catch the ball and get his team into the red zone.If Gronkowski still has enough to win one-on-one battles down the seam, Graham is at least equally as capable and was effective in that role in New Orleans. Having more of a vertical presence from Graham in 2019 to pair with the second-year receivers would be a dimension Green Bay just did not have enough of last offseason. Seattle also struggled to game plan according to Graham’s strengths, but perhaps Matt LaFleur can help in this regard. Graham does not have the same type of quickness in his route-running that he used to. But neither the wheel route nor the seam require elite athleticism to be successful.New England’s fourth quarter playcalling not only benefited from a slot weapon like Edelman, it took advantage of Gronkowski’s remaining dominant skills. Green Bay has something to learn in both areas as the offseason truly begins. Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski missed the Week Seven game at Chicago, and he played in the last game of Week Eight, Monday night at Buffalo.For Sunday night’s Gathering of the GOATs (I’m trying several different ideas; none are all that good), Gronk may not play.Per a league source, he’s a game-time decision, at best. The Cowboys’ home/road splits are stark this year: Dallas has scored more than 22 points on the road just twice all year, and more than 30 just once (in week 17 against a hapless Giants team). Equanimeous St. Brown was picked in the sixth round and might actually be the most well-rounded and ready player among the three rookies. If an opposing offense gets into the red zone, they’re scoring a touchdown.Not in Week 12!An amazing goal line stand against the San Francisco 49ers may have been the singularly most influential string of plays in the entire game.Not out of it, and only down one score, the opposing team had an opportunity to set the game back to zero and only have to win the last quarter and some change to get the victory.Instead, thanks to the Buccaneers’ defensive stand on the goal line, the 49ers walked away dissatisfied and still trailing. This gave the Bucs offense the chance to capitalize and put more space between themselves and their opponents, which they did.27-9 isn’t the final score if the defense doesn’t stand up there, and we’ve all seen this team crumble when playing even or behind. It wasn’t the only time the defense stood up for the team this past weekend, and at least for one week, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers shut the door before their opponent could get their big toe in. Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians was vague about defensive tackle Gerald McCoy‘s roster status at the league meetings last week and McCoy is not at this week’s workouts, but a couple of the top defensive line prospects for this year’s draft have been in town.Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that former Clemson defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence and former Houston defensive lineman Ed Oliver were both in to meet with the team.Oliver has also gotten some looks from teams as a linebacker during the pre-draft process, but he called himself the best defensive lineman in this year’s class at the Scouting Combine. Lawrence is definitely going to be playing on the defensive line in the NFL and his mix of size and ability has led many to predict he’ll be coming off the board early in the first round.The Bucs have met with a variety of other defensive players recently and it seems like a good bet that they will be bolstering their front seven if they stay put at No. 5 in the first round.

For where he was picked, the Lions actually got a really good return on that investment, and it’s not on Quinn that Zettel didn’t fit into the team’s plans after a coaching change.However, Miles Killebrew, Joe Dahl, Antwione Williams, Jake Rudock, Jimmy Landes and Dwayne Washington have all either been complete non-factors or have really struggled in their limited playing time. Detroit entered this draft with 10 picks and left with 10 picks. Instead, he chose to stand pat and collect guys that would amount to training camp and practice squad fodder. That’s not acceptable when you have so much Day 3 draft capital. All that being said, this was Quinn’s first draft and he was likely overwhelmed dealing with entirely new resources from the ones he had grown accustomed to in New England. It likely takes a couple years to get settled from a general manager standpoint, especially for a first-time GM.
